The Gift

Read Matthew 23:1-12

“The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

I was one of the Dust Bowl babies that was sick with pneumonia and almost died. There were many babies and children lost at that time because of the dust in the air. I remember waking up screaming telling my mother that this man was chasing me on his tricycle. This left me with holes in both my eardrums, so therefore, I could not hear well. With no operation at that time I spent the next 12 years going to the doctor to heal my ears. This produced in me humility because of so many people that were kind to me. My father also taught me to smile through bad times. I spent a lot of time with him in the garden, or when he was busy making things with his many tools, I would make mud pies and serve him tea. I didn’t like being around people because i couldn’t hear them well. That is when I developed this beautiful box in my mind that has served me well all my life.

I have this imaginary box, the biggest I could find. I fill it up to the brim with all the good things that people have done for me all my life. This box without a lock or a key; I open gratefully for every time when someone needs help or kind word. I reach into the box and give away one of those grateful deeds or kind words of joy I have received. I freely give away these gifts with humility for the love I have received. I open wide and praise our Gracious God for these wonderful gifts every day.

Prayer: Comforting God, thank you for all the love and comfort you have blessed us with. Show us what steps we can take to help others and deal with issues in our lives. Amen.
